DEMOCRAT MIKE DENKLAU ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR IOWA’S 5th
CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
Council Bluffs, IA – October 14, 2009 – Council Bluffs resident Mike Denklau will announce
tomorrow that he is running for Iowa’s 5th Congressional District seat, opposing incumbent Steve King.
Denklau, a fourth-generation Iowan and former banker with extensive business and economic
experience, intends to put his knowledge to work revitalizing western Iowa through Congress.
“Having grown up in a small farming community, I understand firsthand the enormous challenges in
front of us,” Denklau said. “I know what it’s like to receive a first-rate education at one of Iowa’s
universities, and not to have in-state opportunities after graduation. I’m running for Congress to offer
bold leadership focused on the needs of western Iowans and to create new opportunities for all people
living in the 5th District.”
Denklau supports robust job creation in industries where western Iowa has a competitive advantage,
such as green energy and farming. “I want this campaign to be about supporting hard-working Iowans,”
Denklau said. “We need effective congressional representation that is responsive to the needs of western
Iowa. Every day that I travel the district, I see that Iowans are working more for less. That’s why I am
committed to turning down congressional pay raises until the economy is working again for 5th District
Iowans.”
“I also have experience fighting to change policy in Washington,” Denklau said. “I will draw upon that
experience to move beyond the partisanship and inaction that is keeping us all mired in the past; the
future demands that all of us work together to address our greatest challenges – Republicans,
Independents and Democrats alike.”
Former U.S. Congressman Berkley Bedell was recently quoted as saying of Mike, “As a businessman
and lifelong resident of western Iowa, I know how much work there is to be done on behalf of Iowans in
the 5th Congressional District. Mike Denklau has the drive, energy and vision to move our district in a
new and positive direction.”
“Mike has the perspective and finance experience we need in our Washington representation,” said
former Congressman Bedell. “Most importantly, as a native Iowan, he will be an enthusiastic fighter on
behalf of all Iowans, regardless of party affiliation. Please join me in supporting Mike’s campaign to
deliver change and restore Iowa values in Congress.”
Denklau will launch his campaign with appearances in Sioux City, Council Bluffs and Des Moines on
October 15.
