IMMIGRATION POLICY:

I support vigorous law enforcement activity to block illegal immigration across our borders for sound economic and national security policy reasons. That tough law enforcement activity requires appropriate Congressional funding through the economic stimulus measures that I have consistently supported.

Concerning illegal immigrants already on U.S. soil and in Iowa, I support immediate federal prosecution or deportation for any illegal immigrants with terrorist affiliations or violent criminal histories. I also support pragmatic national immigration policy reforms that balance penalties for immigrating illegally for economic reasons with accommodation of the legitimate needs of Iowa businesses. We need sensible reform to prevent another Postville. At the same time, comprehensive reform must strike a balance between economic needs, enhancing national security, protecting American wages and ensuring American competitiveness.

If elected, I will work with the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department, the faith community in Western Iowa, concerned labor groups across the 5th District, local chambers of commerce, colleagues in Congress and officials in Iowa government to address our broken immigration system effectively.
